I haven't had any brownie

I haven't had any brownie iesuss but I always make the really fudgy ones that don't need to puff up much. What's the secret to cake? I've tried adding more flour, decreasing leaveners, raising the oven temp, EVERYTHING. I'm losing my mind! :(
